Plastic Surgery Gone Wrong

What should you do if you feel your cosmetic surgery has gone wrong? Have you suffered from a complication that has been discussed with you or have you had a complication which has not been discussed with you? Is this an objective problem or are you unhappy because the cosmetic outcome is not to your liking? All of these constitute an unfavourable outcome to you and therefore by implication for the surgeon. All surgeons have such cases.

Firstly check the documentation provided by the surgeon’s staff on the operation and the possible risks. Were any diagrams drawn or before and after photographs taken? Ask to go over these documents again with the surgeon. The surgeon should have discussed fully the potential problems of your surgery and risks prior to surgery.
The surgeon should listen and note down your concerns. If he feels he can correct this for you then he will usually waive his fee and the anaesthetic fee. The hospital fee may be reduced. The cosmetic surgery package price will usually include a number of days after surgery when any complication such as bleeding can be rectified at no extra charge to the patient, but it is the responsibility of the patient to scrutinize the terms and conditions of the individual price quotation from the hospital before surgery.

If he disagrees with you or is unable to improve the result then the best way forward is to seek a second opinion. The name of another plastic surgeon can best be found from your GP or the BAAPS website www.baaps.org.uk
